Acclaimed New Work Promotes Interaction Design as Way of Life
Dan Saffer's "Designing for Interaction" Emphasizes User Experience
In his newly released book, Designing for Interaction, interaction design expert, Dan Saffer, approaches design as an applied art form, indeed, as a way of life. According to Saffer, good and bad designs affect us everyday, and his book aptly and succinctly explains how. Saffer emphasizes the everyday user and demonstrates how interaction design is produced and applied to nearly all things.
Saffer's book has been called a "fresh, accessible and thoughtful guide to interaction design" (Richard Grefe, Executive Director, AIGA) and "a bookshelf must-have for anyone thinking of creating new designs" (Jared Spool, CEO of UIE).
Designing for Interaction is distinctly practitioner-oriented and brilliantly functions as an introduction into, or perhaps a reconsideration of, the field of interaction design. It is holistic in its approach and can easily serve as a textbook for beginning practitioners or as a guidebook for seasoned designers alike.
"Design is getting attention that it didn't used to," said Saffer. "With my book, I wanted to emphasize the basics and maybe attract new practitioners to the field, while offering seasoned practitioners a different perspective on some old techniques."
Saffer is a senior interaction designer for Adaptive Path, a San Francisco-based, user experience consulting firm. Throughout his career, he has successfully designed for several transactional and e-commerce sites, as well as applications and devices. He has also worked with a wide variety of organizations, from startups to Fortune 100 companies.
Before joining Adaptive Path, Saffer served as the senior interaction designer for Ameritrade, the top online brokerage. He led the initial redesign of the Ameritrade site focusing its features and functionality on active traders. Before joining Ameritrade, he was a producer and creative lead at interactive agencies like Organic and Plural. All told, he's worked in interactive media for over a decade.
Saffer is a member of the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) and the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA). He also serves on the Board of Directors of the Interaction Design Association (IxDA).
Saffer received his Master of Design in Interaction Design from Carnegie Mellon University and specializes in interaction design, user research, conceptual models, and interface design.
